ASI Restores Dwarapala Guardians at Telangana’s Thousand Pillar Temple
The Archaeological Survey of India began a meticulous restoration of the Dwarapala statues that flank the historic Thousand Pillar Temple in Hanumakonda. The project aims to preserve the temple’s architectural integrity for future generations.

The concrete rupture involved the careful removal of weathered stone and the insertion of newly quarried blocks that match the original in colour, texture, and grain. Underlying tension arises from the need to balance heritage conservation with the pressures of urban expansion, as local developers lobby for nearby infrastructure projects that could jeopardise the site’s sanctity. Downstream casualties include the temporary suspension of pilgrim access, a modest rise in tourism revenue, and a renewed public discourse on allocating resources to cultural preservation versus modern development.
