Daljeet Singh Death - HC bars political leaders, groups from Mansa man’s cremation, orders fresh PGIMER autopsy
The Punjab High Court has ordered that political leaders and groups be barred from attending the cremation of Daljeet Singh, while directing police chiefs to maintain peace during the rites. A fresh autopsy by PGIMER has also been mandated to clarify the cause of death.
Daljeet Singh, a resident of Mansa district, died under circumstances that have sparked political controversy and public protests. After his death, several political parties and community groups announced plans to attend his cremation, viewing the event as an opportunity to highlight alleged misconduct by authorities. The High Court intervened, citing concerns that large gatherings could turn volatile and disrupt public order, and therefore issued an order preventing any political presence at the funeral site.
In addition to the restriction on political participation, the court directed the chief officers of Punjab and Union Territory police to ensure that the cremation proceeds without disturbance. Police were instructed to deploy a modest security detail, coordinate with local officials, and keep the area clear of any provocations that could lead to clashes. The court emphasized the need to respect the family's right to a peaceful last rite while also safeguarding public safety, given the heightened emotions surrounding the case.
The court also ordered a new post‑mortem examination to be conducted at the Postgraduate Institute of Medical Education and Research (PGIMER). This step aims to address doubts raised by the family and independent observers regarding the original findings. A thorough autopsy is expected to provide a definitive cause of death, which could influence any ongoing investigations or legal proceedings. The decision reflects the judiciary's effort to balance transparency, family rights, and the broader public interest in a case that has attracted significant media attention.
