District-level advisory committees to be formed in Tamil Nadu to address sales taxpayers’ grievances
The Tamil Nadu government will set up district‑level advisory committees to handle grievances of sales tax payers. The committees are scheduled to meet every three months to review complaints and recommend corrective actions.

In an effort to improve the administration of sales tax, the state of Tamil Nadu announced the formation of advisory committees at the district level. Each committee will comprise officials from the commercial tax department, representatives of local business associations, and selected members of civil society. Their primary task is to collect, examine, and prioritize grievances lodged by taxpayers, ensuring that issues such as delayed refunds, assessment disputes, and procedural ambiguities receive timely attention.
The committees are mandated to convene once every three months, a schedule designed to provide regular oversight without overburdening participants. During each meeting, members will discuss the most pressing complaints, assess the adequacy of existing procedures, and propose adjustments to policy or practice. The recommendations will be forwarded to the state revenue authority, which will decide on implementation. This structured approach aims to reduce the backlog of unresolved cases and promote a more transparent tax environment.
For businesses and individual traders across India, the move matters because sales tax compliance directly affects cash flow and operational planning. A more responsive grievance mechanism can lower the cost of doing business, encourage formal registration, and improve confidence in the tax system. Moreover, the initiative aligns with broader national efforts to modernise tax administration and could serve as a model for other states seeking to address taxpayer concerns more effectively.
