Govt. conspiring to damage Mallannasagar with blasts near bund, alleges Harish Rao
BRS leader Harish Rao has accused the government of planning to damage Mallannasagar by conducting blasts near its bund. He cited irrigation guidelines that prohibit blasting within 400 metres of any bund structure.

In a recent statement, senior leader Harish Rao of the Bharat Rashtra Samithi alleged that the state government is conspiring to undermine Mallannasagar reservoir by authorising explosive work close to its protective bund. Rao referred to technical guidelines governing irrigation structures, which clearly state that any blasting activity must maintain a minimum distance of 400 metres from a bund to avoid compromising its integrity. He warned that violating this rule could lead to structural failure, loss of stored water, and downstream flooding during the monsoon season.
The controversy arises amid ongoing development projects aimed at improving water management in the region. While officials claim that the blasting is part of routine maintenance to clear encroachments and improve access, opposition parties argue that the timing and location of the work are politically motivated. The bund at Mallannasagar is a critical component of the irrigation network, supplying water to thousands of hectares of farmland. Any damage to it could have immediate repercussions for agricultural output and the livelihoods of farmers who depend on the reservoir.
The dispute has prompted calls for an independent technical review to verify whether the proposed blasting complies with safety standards. Local residents and farmer groups have organized protests, demanding transparency and assurance that their water supply will not be jeopardised. The outcome of this debate will likely influence public confidence in the government's handling of water infrastructure projects, especially as the state prepares for the upcoming planting season.
