HMWSSB to launch green water tanker services from November 1
The Hyderabad Metropolitan Water Supply and Sewerage Board (HMWSSB) will begin operating green water tanker services from November 1 to address water shortages. The deadline for private sewage treatment plant registrations has been extended to October 25.

The HMWSSB announced that a fleet of environmentally friendly water tankers will start delivering treated water to areas facing acute shortages beginning on November 1. The green tankers are equipped with energy‑efficient pumps and use recyclable containers, aiming to reduce the carbon footprint associated with traditional water distribution. Officials said the service will prioritize neighborhoods that have reported low pressure or intermittent supply, and they expect the initiative to ease the strain on municipal reservoirs during the upcoming dry season.
In a related move, the board has extended the deadline for private sewage treatment plant (STP) registrations to October 25. The extension gives businesses and residential complexes more time to submit the required documentation to operate their own treatment facilities, a step that the state government believes will lessen the load on public wastewater infrastructure. By encouraging private participation, the board hopes to improve overall water quality and promote reuse of treated water for non‑drinking purposes such as irrigation and industrial cooling.
For residents of Telangana, these measures are significant because water scarcity has become a recurring challenge, affecting agriculture, industry, and daily life. The green tanker program offers a short‑term relief while the push for private STPs represents a longer‑term strategy to manage demand and protect limited water resources. Together, the initiatives reflect a broader effort by state authorities to adopt sustainable practices and ensure a reliable water supply for growing urban populations.
