Watch for upcoming regulatory guidelines from the Reserve Bank of India on AI use in banking.

The International Monetary Fund released a statement this week warning that the accelerating pace of artificial intelligence development could lead to a sharp correction in financial markets. Analysts have noted that AI-driven trading algorithms can amplify price swings, and the Fund fears that a sudden shift in sentiment may trigger rapid sell-offs across asset classes. For India, where digital finance and algorithmic trading are expanding, the warning carries particular weight, as investors and policymakers must prepare for potential volatility that could affect both domestic and foreign capital flows.

The Fund also highlighted a growing cyber threat to the backbone of the global financial system. It said that as AI tools become more sophisticated, they are increasingly being weaponised by hackers seeking to breach the networks of banks, stock exchanges and payment processors. Past incidents have shown how ransomware and data-exfiltration attacks can disrupt trading platforms and erode confidence among market participants. The IMF cautioned that without robust safeguards, the combination of AI-enhanced attacks and vulnerable infrastructure could undermine the stability of critical market infrastructure.

In response, the IMF urged regulators and industry leaders to adopt stronger security frameworks and to conduct regular stress tests that incorporate AI-related scenarios. It recommended that Indian authorities, including the Reserve Bank and securities regulators, update their guidelines to cover the use of AI in trading, risk management and customer service. By investing in advanced detection systems and fostering cooperation between public and private sectors, the financial system can better absorb shocks and protect the interests of investors and consumers alike.
