India's Para Asian Games contingent showcases 5,000 years of heritage
More than 100 Indian athletes marched under the national flag at the opening ceremony of the Para Asian Games, showcasing a cultural display that highlighted five thousand years of Indian heritage. The delegation was led by Paralympic sprinter Simran Sharma and badminton star Pramod Bhagat.

The opening ceremony of the Para Asian Games featured a tableau that traced the evolution of Indian civilization from ancient river valleys to modern achievements. Over a hundred athletes from across the country entered the stadium carrying the Tricolour, while performers presented traditional dances, music and visual motifs that represented milestones in art, science and spirituality. The program was designed to convey a sense of pride and continuity, reminding viewers that the nation’s long history informs its present aspirations on the international sporting stage.
Paralympic medalist Simran Sharma, who earned a gold medal in the 100‑metre sprint at the last Asian Games, led the contingent as the chief flag bearer. Alongside her, world‑class shuttler Pramod Bhagat, a multiple gold medalist at the Paralympics, carried the flag during the march. Their presence highlighted the growing prominence of athletes with disabilities in Indian sport and underscored the government’s commitment to inclusive training facilities and financial support for para‑athletes.
The ceremony also served as a platform to promote awareness of the challenges faced by disabled sportspersons, including limited access to specialized coaching and infrastructure. Organisers hope that the cultural showcase will inspire greater public interest and private sponsorship, which are essential for expanding participation at the grassroots level. By linking heritage with contemporary athletic excellence, the event aims to strengthen national unity and encourage a new generation of athletes to pursue competitive sport despite physical barriers.
