Kerala Rubber Board Launches INR Konnect to Reactivate Dormant Plantations
The digital platform INR Konnect links plantation owners with tappers and agencies, aiming to revive idle rubber estates across the state. Early adoption promises to restore income streams for marginal growers.
The Kerala Rubber Board unveiled INR Konnect, an online marketplace designed to bridge the gap between rubber plantation owners whose lands have lain fallow and skilled tappers seeking work. By cataloguing available plots, required tapping expertise, and associated logistics, the platform streamlines the matchmaking process that previously relied on informal networks and word‑of‑mouth referrals. Initial registrations indicate participation from over two hundred owners and a comparable number of tapping crews, suggesting a robust appetite for coordinated revival efforts.
The initiative addresses a chronic challenge in Kerala’s rubber sector: many smallholders abandoned tapping due to labor shortages, aging trees, or market volatility. Without a reliable conduit to connect with service providers, these estates risk permanent loss of productivity. INR Konnect not only facilitates labor allocation but also integrates payment gateways, ensuring timely remuneration and reducing disputes. The Board hopes that digital transparency will attract younger workers to the trade, revitalising a once‑thriving rural livelihood.
If the platform succeeds in scaling, the economic impact could extend beyond individual plantations. Revived tapping activity would increase raw rubber output, bolstering the state’s contribution to national exports and stabilising prices for downstream manufacturers. Moreover, the model may inspire similar digital interventions in other agricultural commodities, promoting efficiency and resilience across Kerala’s agrarian economy.
