South India Poised to Drive Next Phase of National Steel Expansion, Experts Assert
Analysts project that the southern states will anchor India's steel capacity growth over the coming decade, leveraging port infrastructure, mineral proximity, and industrial corridors. The shift rebalances a sector historically concentrated in the eastern belt.
The assessment, delivered at an industry conclave in Chennai, highlighted commissioned and planned facilities in Tamil Nadu, Karnataka, and Andhra Pradesh that collectively could add twenty million tonnes of annual capacity by 2030. Coastal locations such as Ennore and Krishnapatnam offer logistical advantages for importing coking coal and exporting finished product, reducing dependence on the congested rail networks that serve the traditional hubs of Odisha and Jharkhand. State governments have responded with single-window clearances and power tariff incentives, signalling a competitive federalism that accelerates project timelines.
