Thane Anticipates Traffic Relief as Metro Line 4 and Coastal Road Near Completion
Maharashtra officials project a substantial easing of congestion in Thane within two years, citing the imminent operationalisation of Metro Line 4 and the coastal arterial road. The infrastructure projects are expected to redistribute commuter flows and to stimulate peripheral urban development.
The Maharashtra Metropolitan Region Development Authority has announced that the final phases of Metro Line 4, which will connect Thane to the broader Mumbai suburban network, are slated for commissioning by early 2028. Simultaneously, the coastal road project, a six‑lane expressway skirting the Arabian Sea, is advancing on schedule, with major bridges and interchanges already in place. Together, these corridors aim to divert a significant portion of private vehicle traffic away from the overburdened Eastern Express Highway, thereby reducing travel times for commuters.
Urban planners predict that the enhanced connectivity will spur real‑estate growth in the outskirts of Thane, as developers capitalize on improved access to employment hubs in Mumbai and Navi Mumbai. The anticipated shift in commuter patterns could also alleviate pressure on existing public transport systems, prompting a reallocation of resources toward feeder services and last‑mile connectivity solutions. Local businesses anticipate a surge in footfall as the new transit nodes become focal points for commercial activity.
However, the projects are not without challenges. Environmental groups have raised concerns about the coastal road's impact on mangrove ecosystems, urging the state to implement mitigation measures. Additionally, the financing model, which blends public funds with private investment, will require careful monitoring to ensure cost overruns are avoided. If managed effectively, the infrastructure suite could serve as a template for other congested Indian metros seeking sustainable mobility solutions.
