Vijay launches ₹3,108-cr. ring main pipeline project for equitable drinking water supply
Chief Minister Vijay has launched a ₹3,108‑crore ring main pipeline project aimed at delivering reliable drinking water across the GCC area. The scheme will connect nine treatment plants through a 91.2‑kilometre network of pipelines and advanced monitoring equipment.

The new ring main pipeline is designed to address long‑standing water scarcity issues that have affected households and businesses in the Greater Coimbatore region. By linking nine existing water treatment facilities, the project creates a continuous loop that can balance supply and demand, allowing water to be rerouted quickly in case of maintenance or unexpected disruptions. The investment of over three thousand crore rupees underscores the state’s commitment to improving basic services for a rapidly growing population.
Engineers will lay 91.2 kilometres of high‑density polyethylene pipes beneath major roads and through residential zones, minimizing surface disruption. At each treatment plant and distribution hub, sensors will record pressure, flow rate and water quality in real time, feeding data to a central control centre. This technology enables rapid detection of leaks or contamination, ensuring that corrective actions can be taken before problems affect consumers. The system also includes automated valves that can isolate sections of the network for repairs without halting supply to the entire area.
Local officials expect the project to enhance public health outcomes by providing a steady supply of safe drinking water, reducing reliance on private tankers and bottled water. The improved infrastructure is also likely to attract new industries, supporting economic growth and job creation. Residents have expressed optimism that the initiative will bring stability to daily life, especially during the dry season when water shortages have historically been most acute.
