India Opens Ninth Tranche of Critical Mineral Auctions to Secure Supply Chains
The government has released twenty new blocks for the ninth round of mineral auctions, marking a decisive step toward reducing dependence on imported critical minerals. This move intensifies competition among domestic and international firms seeking access to strategic resources essential for the green energy transition.

The Union government has formally launched the ninth tranche of its mineral block auction programme, offering twenty new blocks to the market. This initiative follows the successful conclusion of eight previous tranches, during which one hundred unique critical and strategic mineral blocks were put up for bid. Of those, sixty four have already been secured by bidders, signalling strong investor confidence in India's mineral wealth and the regulatory clarity surrounding the extraction and processing of these assets.
The underlying tension driving this policy shift is the urgent need to insulate India's industrial base from global supply chain shocks. Critical minerals such as lithium, cobalt, and rare earths are indispensable for the manufacturing of electric vehicles, renewable energy storage, and advanced electronics. By domesticating the auction process and ensuring transparent bidding, the state aims to create a robust domestic supply chain that can withstand geopolitical disruptions and price volatility in international markets.
The tangible outcome of this strategy is the potential for a surge in domestic mining activity and the establishment of processing facilities across various states. This will not only generate employment in mining and allied sectors but also position India as a key player in the global critical minerals market. The downstream impact will be a more secure and cost effective supply chain for industries ranging from defence to consumer electronics, thereby enhancing the nation's strategic autonomy and economic resilience.
