Man dies after attackers trap hands in car windows, drag him for 1.5km - video
A 37‑year‑old man, identified as Biru Singh Bhadauriya, died after being assaulted in Kanpur’s Hanumant Vihar area on Tuesday night. Attackers allegedly trapped his hands in a car window and dragged him for more than a kilometre before he succumbed to his injuries.
The incident occurred as Bhadauriya was returning home from a Dussehra fair that had drawn large crowds to the city’s outskirts. Witnesses reported hearing a commotion near a parked vehicle and seeing a group of men force the victim’s hands into the car’s side windows, effectively immobilising him. The assailants then pulled the vehicle, with Bhadauriya still inside, along a busy street for approximately 1.5 kilometres, causing severe trauma to his limbs and torso. Emergency services arrived after the vehicle stopped, but the victim was pronounced dead at the scene.
Police officials have launched a criminal investigation, treating the case as a homicide with elements of aggravated assault. The investigation team is reviewing CCTV footage from nearby shops and traffic cameras to identify the perpetrators and establish a motive. Early statements from local authorities suggest that the attack may be linked to a personal dispute, though the exact trigger remains unclear. The police have appealed to the public for any additional information that could help locate the suspects, emphasizing the need for swift justice in a case that has shocked the community.
The tragedy has raised concerns about public safety during major festivals, when large numbers of people travel late at night on crowded roads. Residents of Kanpur and other Indian cities are being urged to remain vigilant, avoid isolated areas after events, and report suspicious behaviour promptly. The incident also underscores the importance of improving street lighting and increasing police patrols in high‑traffic zones, measures that could help prevent similar attacks in the future and restore confidence among festival‑goers.
