Manipur Governor Reviews Progress of India‑Myanmar Border Fence
The governor’s inspection of the border fence project highlights delays and funding gaps that threaten the integrity of a critical security corridor.
The governor of Manipur convened a meeting with senior officials to assess the progress of the India‑Myanmar border fence, a critical component of the country’s security architecture. The fence, which stretches over 1,200 kilometres, is intended to curb illegal crossings and smuggling. The governor’s review focused on the construction status, funding allocations, and logistical challenges that have slowed the project.
Officials reported that only 45 per cent of the fence has been completed, with several sections stalled due to land‑acquisition disputes and funding shortfalls. The governor highlighted the need for a coordinated effort between central and state agencies to expedite the remaining work. He also urged the central government to allocate additional resources to address the delays, citing the strategic importance of the border.
The inspection has underscored the vulnerability of the region to cross‑border insurgency and trafficking. Security analysts warn that incomplete fencing could allow militants and smugglers to exploit gaps. The governor’s findings are expected to influence future budgetary decisions and may prompt the central government to accelerate the fence’s completion. In the coming months, the state may also launch a public awareness campaign to mitigate local opposition to the project.
