Periyar Arivulagam is Dravidian model government’s brainchild, says Stalin
Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M. K. Stalin said that the Periyar Arivulagam project is a flagship initiative of the Dravidian model government. He also highlighted a series of library and knowledge centre projects completed during the DMK administration.
The Periyar Arivulagam, announced by the current Tamil Nadu government, is intended to serve as a comprehensive knowledge hub that brings together books, digital resources, and community spaces. The project is named after the social reformer Periyar E. V. Ramasamy, reflecting the state's long tradition of promoting education and social equity. By situating the centre in a central location, the government hopes to make learning resources more accessible to students, researchers, and the general public across the region.
Stalin listed several library projects that have been completed under his tenure, including the Anna Centenary Library in Chennai, which was built to commemorate the birth centenary of former Chief Minister C. N. Annadurai. The library boasts a large collection of regional language books and modern facilities such as reading rooms, multimedia labs, and a children's section. In Madurai, the Kalaignar Centenary Library was inaugurated to honor former Chief Minister M. Karunanidhi, offering similar amenities and serving as a cultural landmark for the city.
Additional initiatives mentioned by the chief minister include the Mudhalvar Padaippagams, a series of publishing houses aimed at supporting local authors and preserving Tamil literature. The renovation of the historic Connemara Public Library in Egmore was also completed, restoring its heritage architecture while upgrading its interior for contemporary use. These efforts collectively demonstrate the government's focus on building a robust infrastructure for knowledge sharing, which is expected to boost literacy rates and a culture of lifelong learning throughout Tamil Nadu.
