Sundarbans childcare workers honoured at National Awards
Childcare workers from the Sundarbans received national awards for their dedication to early childhood development. The ceremony highlighted the efforts of individuals such as Manju Pr, who have served vulnerable families in the region.
The Sundarbans, a network of mangrove islands along the Bay of Bengal, faces unique social and environmental challenges, including frequent flooding, limited access to education and health services, and high rates of child malnutrition. In this context, childcare workers play a vital role by providing early learning opportunities, nutrition monitoring and safe spaces for children whose parents often work in agriculture or fishing. Their work helps break cycles of poverty and supports community resilience in a region that is frequently affected by natural disasters.
At a national awards ceremony organized by the Ministry of Women and Child Development, a group of Sundarbans childcare workers were honored for their sustained commitment. Among the awardees, Manju Pr was recognized for leading a local early childhood centre that serves over a hundred children, implementing innovative play‑based learning methods despite limited resources. The ceremony also acknowledged the collective effort of volunteers who coordinate health check‑ups, distribute educational materials and engage parents in supportive dialogues.
The recognition aims to encourage continued investment in early childhood care across remote areas of India. Officials noted that such awards not only celebrate individual achievements but also draw attention to the need for stronger policy support, increased funding and capacity‑building programs for frontline workers. For families in the Sundarbans, the honors reinforce the value of nurturing environments and signal a broader commitment to improving child welfare nationwide.
