Thrissur MLA seeks urgent action to ease shortage of captive elephants in Keralam
Thrissur MLA Rajan J. Pallan has called for faster clearances to bring captive elephants from other states to Kerala. He emphasized the need for animal welfare and safety while addressing the current shortage.
Elephants have long played a central role in Kerala's cultural celebrations, appearing in temple festivals, processions and community events. In recent years, the number of captive elephants available for these occasions has declined due to aging animals, stricter regulations and growing public concern for their well‑being. Organisers of major festivals in Thrissur and surrounding districts report difficulty in securing enough elephants to meet traditional expectations, prompting calls for a practical solution.
In response, MLA Rajan J. Pallan submitted a formal request to the state government urging the creation of a streamlined, time‑bound clearance process for importing elephants from neighboring states. The proposal stresses that any transfer must be accompanied by rigorous health checks, proper transport arrangements and adherence to the Wildlife Protection Act. Pallan also highlighted the importance of ensuring that the receiving facilities in Kerala meet standards for space, nutrition and veterinary care, thereby protecting the animals while allowing cultural practices to continue.
If the proposed measures are adopted, they could ease the immediate shortage and provide a framework for future collaborations between states on animal management. Experts suggest that a transparent system could also reduce illegal trade and improve overall welfare standards. The move is being watched by cultural committees, wildlife NGOs and festival organizers, all of whom have a stake in balancing tradition with responsible animal stewardship.
