TIMS plans surgical services in phases
The Telangana Institute of Medical Sciences (TIMS) announced a phased rollout of new surgical services to expand its treatment capacity. The plan aims to introduce basic procedures first, followed by more complex surgeries over the coming months.
TIMS officials revealed that the institute will begin offering a limited set of outpatient and minor surgical procedures in the first phase, targeting common conditions such as hernia repairs, cataract removal and basic orthopaedic interventions. The initial rollout will make use of existing operation theatres that have been upgraded with modern equipment, and will be staffed by a core team of surgeons, anaesthetists and nursing personnel who have received additional training for the new protocols. Patients will be able to schedule appointments through an online portal that the institute has launched to manage demand and reduce waiting times.
The decision to expand surgical services comes at a time when Telangana is seeking to improve its public health outcomes and reduce the burden on private hospitals. State health authorities have highlighted the shortage of affordable surgical care in rural and semi‑urban areas, and TIMS’s phased approach is designed to address this gap while ensuring quality and safety. By gradually adding more complex procedures such as cardiac bypass, neurosurgery and transplant services, the institute hopes to build capacity without overextending its resources, and to allow time for the recruitment of specialist doctors from across the country.
For readers throughout India, the development illustrates a broader trend of public hospitals enhancing their capabilities to meet growing health needs. The phased model may serve as a blueprint for other institutions aiming to balance resource constraints with the demand for advanced medical care. Patients in Telangana and neighboring states can look forward to reduced travel distances for surgeries, lower treatment costs and improved health outcomes as the new services become fully operational.
