Upa Lokayukta finds expired food items in eateries in Belagavi bus stand
The Upa Lokayukta in Belagavi reported the presence of expired food items in eateries at the city bus stand. Justice (retd.) B. Veerappa also raised concerns about poor sanitation in the restrooms and ineffective waste collection on the premises.
During a routine inspection of the Belagavi bus stand, the Upa Lokayukta discovered that several food stalls were selling items that had passed their expiry dates, putting commuters at risk of food‑borne illnesses. The investigation was prompted by complaints from travelers who noticed unusual odors and signs of neglect in the dining area. Officials collected samples of the expired products and have forwarded them to a state laboratory for safety testing. The findings have triggered a call for stricter enforcement of food safety regulations in public transport hubs.
Justice (retd.) B. Veerappa, who heads the Upa Lokayukta, highlighted that the problem extends beyond food quality to the overall hygiene of the bus stand. He pointed out that the restrooms are in a state of disrepair, lacking basic cleaning supplies and regular maintenance. Additionally, the garbage collection system is described as inefficient, with waste often piling up near seating areas, creating an unsightly and unhealthy environment for passengers. The Lokayukta has recommended immediate remedial actions, including a comprehensive cleaning drive and the installation of proper waste segregation bins.
Local authorities have responded by pledging to increase the frequency of inspections and to impose penalties on vendors found violating health standards. The municipal corporation has also announced plans to upgrade the sanitation infrastructure, which includes renovating restroom facilities and hiring additional cleaning staff. Community groups have welcomed these measures, emphasizing that a clean and safe bus stand is essential for the well‑being of daily commuters and for maintaining the city’s reputation as a tourist destination.
