In a hearing that drew attention from commuters across the capital, the Supreme Court cautioned the Centre that a blanket ban on Delhi’s metro and suburban train services would disrupt the daily movement of millions of people.
Authorities had temporarily halted certain services and limited train frequencies, prompting criticism from commuters who rely on the metro for affordable and timely travel. The court’s intervention comes at a time when the city is grappling with rising demand for public transport and the need to maintain order during large gatherings.
Following the court’s remarks, the Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs has been asked to reassess the measures and propose alternatives that balance security with the right to mobility. Officials are expected to submit a revised plan that may include targeted security checks, increased police presence, and better communication with the public.
