India Readies Energy and Fertiliser Reserves Amid West Asia Turmoil
The central government announced that strategic stockpiles of oil, gas and fertiliser are at heightened levels, aiming to shield domestic markets from regional supply shocks. Traders responded with a brief rally in commodity futures, reflecting confidence in the buffer measures.
In a briefing held at the Ministry of Petroleum and Natural Gas, officials detailed the volume of crude oil and liquefied natural gas stored in strategic depots across the country, noting that the reserves now exceed the minimum threshold set after the 2022 price spikes. Simultaneously, the Ministry of Chemicals and Fertilisers disclosed that warehouses in Gujarat and Madhya Pradesh hold a surplus of urea and potash sufficient to meet three months of domestic demand. These preparations are framed as a pre‑emptive safeguard against potential disruptions emanating from the volatile West Asian region.
The move comes as diplomatic tensions flare over the conflict in the Middle East, prompting concerns about the continuity of maritime routes that supply India with a substantial share of its energy imports. Analysts argue that the government’s decision reflects an awareness of the fragility of global supply chains, and a desire to prevent price volatility that could cascade into the agricultural sector. By bolstering reserves, the state also signals to international partners its capacity to weather external shocks without resorting to emergency imports that could strain foreign exchange reserves.
Market participants have already adjusted their positions, with the Bombay Stock Exchange’s commodity index showing a modest uptick in fertiliser futures and a stabilization of crude oil contracts. Farmers, who had feared a surge in input costs, expressed cautious optimism, while industry groups warned that sustained geopolitical instability could still pressure logistics and raise transportation costs. The policy thus serves as both a buffer and a signal, aiming to maintain economic stability while the world watches the unfolding crisis.
