JNU to confer ‘Professor Emeritus’ title on Amitabh Mattoo
Jawaharlal Nehru University will award the title of Professor Emeritus to Amitabh Mattoo after his retirement on February 28, 2027. The decision was taken at a recent governing body meeting.

The governing body of Jawaharlal Nehru University met last week to discuss several academic matters, including the conferral of honorary titles. After deliberation, members agreed to grant Amitabh Mattoo the title of Professor Emeritus, a distinction that recognizes a scholar's long‑term contribution to the university and to the field of public policy. The title will become effective after Mattoo voluntarily steps down from his current position on February 28, 2027, allowing him to retain a formal association with the campus.
Amitabh Mattoo has spent more than three decades teaching, researching, and publishing on issues of governance, federalism, and international relations. He has authored several books that are used in university curricula across the country and has served on advisory panels for the government. His work has helped shape policy debates on decentralization and regional development, earning him respect among peers and students alike. The emeritus title will enable him to continue mentoring junior faculty and to participate in seminars without the administrative responsibilities of a full‑time professor.
The practice of awarding emeritus status is common among Indian universities as a way to honor senior academics while keeping their expertise accessible to the academic community. JNU's decision underscores its commitment to retaining intellectual capital and to providing continuity in research leadership. Alumni and current students have expressed approval, noting that Mattoo's ongoing involvement will enrich the university's intellectual environment.
