Water released from Shenbagathoppu dam due to rain
Heavy rain prompted the release of water from the Shenbagathoppu dam, raising river levels along the Kamandalam Naganathi. Officials have warned residents in several towns to avoid the waterway.

Following a spell of intense rainfall in the Tiruvannamalai district, authorities opened the spillway gates of the Shenbagathoppu dam to manage the rising reservoir level. The controlled release is a standard safety procedure designed to protect the dam structure and downstream areas from uncontrolled overflow. The water discharge has increased the flow in the Kamandalam Naganathi river, which runs through the towns of Cheyyar, Arani, Vandavasi and Polur, prompting local officials to issue precautionary advisories.
Collector Vandhana Garg addressed the public in a press briefing, urging people to stay away from the riverbanks and avoid crossing the waterbody at any point. She highlighted that the current water level poses a risk of sudden surges, especially in low‑lying sections where the current can become swift and unpredictable. Residents have been asked to keep children and livestock away from the river and to follow any further instructions from the disaster management team. The collector also reminded citizens that the flood warning system will remain active until the water flow returns to normal levels.
The release of water comes at a time when the monsoon season is expected to continue, and similar actions may be required in the coming weeks. Local authorities have mobilized additional police and disaster response teams to monitor the situation and to assist anyone who may be affected by the rising waters. Communities are being encouraged to prepare emergency kits and to stay informed through official channels, as the river’s behavior can change quickly with ongoing rainfall.
